Ramp-Day Checklist

A short, practical list of what to have in the boat and on the trailer before you back down the ramp. Products are listed as text only; prices come from Amazon.

What the Coast Guard requires

Federal rules (33 CFR 175 and 46 CFR 25) set the minimum for recreational boats. Your state may add more, so check your state boating handbook too.

• Life jackets: one USCG-approved, properly sized wearable life jacket for every person on board, readily accessible (not in a sealed bag). Children under 13 must wear one while underway unless below deck or in an enclosed cabin, under federal rules; many states set their own age.
• Throwable device: boats 16 ft and longer (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one Type IV throwable cushion or ring, immediately available.
• Fire extinguisher: required on boats with inboard engines, enclosed fuel or engine compartments, closed living spaces or permanently installed fuel tanks. Check that the gauge is in the green and the date is current.
• Sound signal: every boat needs a way to make an efficient sound signal. Under 39.4 ft (12 m) a whistle or horn is enough; larger boats need a horn and a bell.
• Also required where they apply: visual distress signals on coastal waters and the Great Lakes, navigation lights between sunset and sunrise, and a working backfire flame arrestor and ventilation on gasoline inboards.

Before you leave the driveway

• Drain plug in, transom straps on, winch strap and safety chain hooked.
• Trailer lights work (have someone watch brake lights and turn signals).
• Tire pressure checked against the number on the tire sidewall, hubs greased.
• Keys, registration, fishing license and a dry bag for phones.
